Jordin Alanis

Jordin Alanis is a painter born in Acambaro, Mexico. She currently works and paints in Brooklyn, NY. Alanis creates paintings inspired by the beliefs of ancient cultures such as the Aztecs and Mayans. In her work, the artist brings a sense of cosmic and dreamlike to her already otherworldly paintings, inviting viewers to imagine the limitless possibilities of the universe beyond our own. She hopes to evoke a sense of mystery and wonder within the viewer.

Collect Bean: What does growth mean to you?

Jordin Alanis: Growth to me means not only growing in my practice but also as an individual. Like trying new things out of my comfort zone or being open to new ideas of thinking. It could be as small as trying to do yoga every other day, picking a new way to walk home, or trying matcha with vanilla. Growing to be is being open to change and experiences and welcoming them with open arms! (:

Collect Bean: Where are you currently finding inspiration?

Jordin Alanis: I’ve been finding inspiration in books and films. I'm always watching something while doing something else. I LOVE a good visual, especially films that explore space, feelings, and time. Two films that come to mind are “Comet” and “Your Name.”

Collect Bean: What role does color play in your practice?

Jordin Alanis: Color plays a really big role in my practice. I'm always using reds and greens. The reason is that I want all my work to be part of a story, almost like a comic book. However, each time, it's a different character in a different time in a different dimension. 

Collect Bean: Do you have a saying that you live by?

Jordin Alanis: If you don't like something do something about it. I believe that there is always space for change sometimes change doesn't happen overnight but rather happens over small decisions on your part that will lead to a bigger one. 

Collect Bean: If you had to describe your work in only three words, what would they be?

Jordin Alanis: Cosmic, Female lead, Sparkle
